Year 4 Information
Dear Year5 Parents/Carers,
Welcome back and Happy New Year! We are looking forward to a busy and exciting Spring term with lots of fascinating learning opportunities. We believe that parents and teachers work best in partnership so please come and talk to us if there is anything that you are unsure about.
This term, we continue with Talk for Writing and will be creating individual storybooks based on animals, inspired by Gorilla by Anthony Browne. We will also be studying a variety of sentence structures to add cohesion to our writing.Children will continue to develop their reading skills in a variety of texts through Destination Reader.
Geography and History
This term, we will be investigating the Great Barrier Reef. We will be using maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe physical and human features. We will be learning about environmental issues and how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.
Children will be reinforcing the application of concepts and skills of the four operations and using various strategies to solve word problems. We will be learning about fractions and decimals and the relationship between the two. Through topic and science, we will also be applying measuring and data skills. Children will also continue to focus on targeted times tables within sessions and hopefully be supported with this at home.
In Science, we will be focusing on the classification of animals, their habitats and the manner in which they adapt. In the second half of the term, will be investigating the different states of matter.
In RE, we have been learning about Jesus’ New Commandment to ‘Love one another’ and his two Greatest Commandments. We will be researching what Christian Aid do to put their beliefs into action and thinking about ways we ourselves can live out Jesus’ commandment to ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Then we will be looking at the parables of Jesus, including that of the Good Samaritan.
We will be working closely with on topic and will be producing abstract sea paintings and different mythical sea creature drawings. Children will also have the opportunity to investigate and produce painting based on the Great Wave of Kanagawa. We will explore wire sculpture artists and create our own for our school garden.
Through our topic, we will be using clay to produce life forms of The Great Barrier Reef and using inventor Cornelis Drebbel as inspiration to make a model submarine.
- Please encourage your child to read at home each day and to talk to you about what they have read
